Match the light to the mirror. A vanity light should be about as wide as the mirror, or up to 75 percent of the vanity width. A 24 in. mirror takes a 3-light bar around 20 to 24 in.; a 36 in. mirror takes a 4- or 5-light bar; a 48 to 60 in. double vanity takes a 6-light bar or two separate fixtures. Mount the fixture 75 to 80 in. off the floor, above the mirror.

Choose the light type. Integrated LED bars give even, shadow-free light and never need bulbs. Many fixtures with glass shades take standard bulbs, so you can set the color temperature yourself. Dimmable models let the same light work for morning makeup and a late bath.

Matte black is the largest group here, followed by chrome, gold, and brushed nickel, with crystal and acrylic accent styles for a dressier bathroom.
