Space pendants over an island. Hang the bottom of the shade 30 to 36 in. above the counter. Over a 6 ft island, two pendants spaced about 30 in. apart look balanced; three pendants suit islands 8 ft and longer. Keep pendants at least 6 in. in from each end of the counter.

Match the shade to the job. Clear glass gives the most light for prep work; frosted and opal glass soften the glow for a dining nook; crystal and multi-light cluster pendants act as a focal point over a table. Adjustable cord and chain lengths let one fixture fit an 8 or 10 ft ceiling.

Gold and black are the main finishes here, with wood, chrome, and green accents. Most take standard E26 bulbs, sold separately.
